A Workplace Fire-Safety Checklist

Workplace fire safety is about more than having an extinguisher in the room. Here are a few basics worth reviewing on a regular schedule:

• Exit routes: Kept clear, clearly signed, and never blocked by stock or equipment.
• Suppression equipment: Placed where it's easy to reach, with expiry dates and maintenance checked on schedule.
• Alarm systems: Working reliably, tested regularly, with staff who know how to respond when one goes off.
• High-risk areas: Electrical rooms, chemical storage, and industrial kitchens need their own assessment and equipment.
• Regular drills: Staff should be trained and practice evacuation at least once a year.
